WEEK2 - CALL? Canva? What are they?
Hi peeps! It had been a week since I updated
my blog. Frankly speaking, I almost forgot to update my blog for week 2 😬 Maybe I
was too excited for my mid-semester break even though it was just two weeks
after this semester started. Ya, our mid-semester break is literally more like an
early semester break (?). By the way, I would like to wish all of you Happy Chinese New Year! Have a lot of
fun with your family and friends. Spend your precious time wisely peeps 🎉
Okay,
so back to what I have learned in class last week, Madam Azida taught us about
CALL. I am pretty sure that some of you are not really aware of this. Basically,
CALL or Computer-Assisted Language Learning is activities that employ computers
in teaching and learning new language. This is not the first time I learned and
heard about CALL since I had learned it during my diploma where I was required
to do a micro-teaching by using a software called ‘Kahoot!’. From what I had observed, learning language especially
English through this medium is more vivid and fun as it promotes active
participation among the students. Plus, technology is powerful and has strong
influence where it can grab the students’ attention well.
In
addition, I got to know about the progression of CALL which are Behaviouristic
CALL, Communicative CALL, and Integrated CALL. From the lecture, I managed to
identify the differences between the progression of CALL and the advantages of
each progression. I am more attracted to Communicative CALL where it focused more on the usage of language rather than teaching the language – its rules,
syntax, phonemes, and morphemes. This progression creates an environment where
the use of language becomes natural. For example, students can learn language by
watching videos so that they can implement it in real life conversation. Therefore,
in learning language, communication and interaction are very important.
Next,
during the last class of the week, Madam Azida guided us in using Canva
website. Canva is a graphic-design tool website where the users can design
their own poster, logo, card, and many more. It is an application where it is
widely used by the non-designers as well as professionals. Previously, I had
used this website to create logos and posters for my assignments but I am not really
good with it. So, when Madam Azida mentioned that we were going to learn how to
use Canva.com, I got excited. Madam asked us to design the first post entry
based on our own creativity. There were tons of design and layout to choose which
make me confuse. They were all pretty but I decided to go with the minimalist
style. If you are interested to design your own wedding cards or such, you can
visit this website https://www.canva.com/
Lastly,
learning language through technology has a lot of advantages rather than
disadvantages if we are able to limit ourselves. So use your computer wisely! I
really hope this entry could be such a great help for all of you who want to
know about CALL and Canva website.
Till next time! Bye peeps 💛
